The Mortgage Lifter Heirloom tomatoes are huge tomatoes. They are Non-GMO and packed full of real tomato flavor. The Mortgage Lifter tomato came to life in West Virginia in the late 1930s. An old homesteader developed a huge beefsteak tomato and sold transplants. He had his mortgage paid off in six years by breeding this strain of Heirloom, open-pollinated tomato. These get 2 to 4 pounds with a pound to a pound-and-a-half average. Start these indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost, and you can start picking them in about 85 days.
