As an alternative you can salso grow hollyhocks from seed indoors in mid to late spring, or outside directly in late May-June.
Hollyhocks do not do well in shade but they do require well-drained soil in order to thrive.
Hollyhocks are easy to grow from seed and will readily self-seed in your garden.
