California orange poppies add a flash of colour to any garden, they're easy on the eye and come in many different shades such as orange, coral, pink,red, yellow, ivory or white. These flowers are the official flower for the state of California hence where they get their name.

The flowers can be single or double and are followed by long, curved seedpods.

California poppies are easy to grow from seed and unlike others, these seeds will thrive in poor soil conditions as they require very little maintenance and the average rain-fall is usually enough to sustain these flowers without any additional irrigation.

California poppies do not transplant well so its best to sow seeds directly.

The best planting times for poppies are from late summer until late April. These seeds need well-drained soil in an area which receives full sun.

Frequent dead-heading will encourage further flowers and its best to leave a few as to aid with self-seeding.
