What has happened to our farmers markets
Share
Hello folks it seems like farmers markets are not what they used to be. I was at my Saturday market yesterday it's a sad sad sight we have one person with store bought fruit the hole place looks like a over priced flea market. No one is buying anything
Cause no one is bringing hand made items.
It was the same thing at our bigger market in the next town over. What it's boiling down to
First off our venders are really over pricing stuff
Come on $15 per pound for heirloom tomatoes
Also over the last couple of years I have really noticed people don't care about eating healthy or even want to cook. And can care less about their carbon footprint. This really sadens a lot of people. So for you beginning homesteaders and market growers. You will need to find a different way to direct market your stuff. Our suggestions are
Network with people who cook and embrace family values.
Put up a self service farm stand and keep it stocked and fresh.
Load up your pick up or van and put a sign fresh veggies. Drive around the neighborhoods and your town. Engage with people.
Keep your prices fair.
You don't need $6 a bunch for carrots or radishes
You have to have repeat business.
Have stuff as it's in season. Have unique stuff
And do it cause you want keep the tradition alive
Not for profit. If you have this mindset you will make a living or at least have a chunk of your yearly income. I have been part of the heirloom movement since I was a child.
But. It breaks my heart to see our farmers markets
Get destroyed let's fix the problem. Be part of the solution. Every one should care about eating wholesome healthy food and carbon footprint
Put your middle finger in the air and wave it like you just don't care let's take our heritage back one batch of pickles or jam at a time
Market farmers used to be a essential part of the USA. Let's get growing again
