How Winter Benefits Your Garden
Share
Hey Guys,
I hope everyone is doing well.
Like I mentioned in an earlier post, we've been looking recently at some gardening tips on how to prepare your garden for various times of the year. Today's posts have been focusing on winter.
Tomorrow we'll be looking at spring, but before we move on from winter, I just wanted to talk a little about how winter actually benefits your garden.
So, let's dive right in:
Not much happens in winter to be honest, everything starts to slow down, the weather turns colder and we find ourselves spending more and more time indoors.
This gives your garden a perfect opportunity to recover after the hustle and bustle of busy growing season.
But all is not as it seems...
Although it may not look like there's that much happening above ground during winter, but this time of year is what your garden needs in order to truly thrive come the following growing season next year.
The important thing to keep in mind is that you do really need to do your garden prep, this is a step that cannot be overlooked. Your garden will thank you for it and the earlier you get this work done, the less likely you'll be to be caught short and have to do this work outdoors once the weather gets really cold!
This winter dormancy period is vital for your garden because it's one of the most productive time of the year for your plants even when it looks like nothing is happening.
This is because during periods of dormancy, plants have a hormonal response which is triggered by the cold weather which slows a plant's metabolism and inhibits new growth.
Plants focus their energy below ground, building up strong root systems thst will help plants to remain hardy for years to come.
With a little prep, you'll enjoy a break from your gardening duties during these cold winter months, and your plants will thrive come spring.
Thank you for reading,
until next time,
Kim
