How To Prepare Your Garden For Spring (Part One)
Share
Hey Guys,
I hope everyone is doing well.
First off, I'd like to apologise because these posts are coming a lot later than I'd originally intended. Sometimes life gets in the way and totally disrupts the blogging schedule.
Secondly, I'd like to thank you guys for your patience.
So, last week we kicked things off with looking at how to prepare your garden for winter, so this time around, we're looking at getting your garden ready for spring.
So let's dive right in:
1: The Big Garden Clean Up:
Tidying up the garden seem like a never-ending chore, especially since it's already been done in preparation for winter.... One way to lessen the burden of cleaning up the garden is to ensure that it is done regularly.
When it comes to pre-spring cleaning your garden, you need to remember things such as collecting any dead leaves and stalks that have fallen to the ground. These need to be cleared away as they can harbour diseases and allow bacteria to develop and infect your plants. That would be a very bad start to the growing season.
2: Reduce & Reuse & Compost:
Even if clearing out all of the organic matter such as dead leaves and the like can feel like hard work.... There's an upside... you can add all of this organic matter to your compost pile. In the spring, you should make a point of turning over the compost pile, as it has been working hard over the winter and you'll find that the bottom layer will make for excellent mulch which is perfect for flower beds!
3: Clean Out Weeds!:
As part of your soil preparation, it's important to remove as many weeds as possible to give your growing season the best possible start. During the cold winter months weeds have remained relatively untouched, that's why it's important to get rid of them all once the weather begins to warm up before they have any opportunity to raid your garden which will cause huge problems down the road!
4: Get Rid Of Pests:
Even though you've taken the time to help prevent diseases from spreading in your garden, sometimes pests will still be drawn to your plants.
Check underneath leaves for bugs and flies. Some species can be brushed off, but others will need a specialist pest treatment.
There will be a second half to this coming up shortly.
Thank you for reading,
Until next time,
Kim
